Yorkville - Fun - Football 1964

Yorkville Message Board

Hi Marty,

I did not live in Yorkville. I lived in the upper Bronx in 1962 a bunch of us from the Bronx played football against a team from Yorkville, in Central Park. Neither team was very good but we did have a lot of talent. We were all about 16 and had no formal coaching. We became good friends and decided to combine teams. We found an old friend of mine who had coaching experience and thus the Viking football team was born. Two years later we won the BUA championship. On weekend nights we would spend 1 week in the Bronx and the next in Yorkville. I made some really good friends: Vinny Sirni, Steve Bakay. I often wonder about several of the others, Ronniue Samuels, Bob Logren, and so many more. I am enclosing a picture of our 1964b team. Maybe some of the guys will see it and contact me. Thank you.

Don DeAngelis, now living in Florida (June 7, 2007). "don deangelis" <taxi287@hotmail.com>

Here is Denny Ferado's picture of the football team that was from Yorkville and played on Sundays (?) in Central Park. Denny is seen right away and I was able to recognize my brother (thanks to Denny) , Paddy Dougherty, and Jimmy Whelan.

If I find this picture on Facebook (Denny's collection), we can tag a few of the people in this picture.

I obtained this picture with the names tagged from Philip Wilson. Thanks Philip. Hopefully maybe a few comments will come about with this picture now being tagged with additional names.

Holy Cow !!!

Bobby Regan is #75 in that photo. That number was later worn by Mike McCall, then #69, and now deceased.

Do you have Bobby's e-mail address?
Brian Wade, #43, and Bobby Schildhorn, #00, were trying to reach him for the 9/17/2011 dinner-dance.

Re the other photos...

The first is of a Bronx team - about 10 years after the Rams were founded. The reference to Yorkville is as a "visitor" not for games played v. a Yorkville team. Still NICE. Interesting... that guy is in Florida. I will write to him.

The second photo was sent to you by ME.
Is that not your brother, Paddy, on the left of the photo (right of the crowd) wearing the helmet? I am sure it is.
Plus... you cut off Joe Coleman's head and cut Bob Engle from the right??? UGH !!!

The interesting thing about that photo is that there are dual connections...

1. Many had connections with Our Lady of Good Counsel
2. Many had connections ten years later with the Yorkville Rams

1. Paddy Naughton and I were OLGC Class of 1954; Jimmy Gibbons was Class of 1953; Roger "Tank" Hafner married Patsy Janek, Class of 1954

2. Charlie Francis' brother was Rams' #88, Eddie Francis; Tommy Maloney, Bob Engle and I played in the last Yorkville year of the Rams.

Lotsa Good Memories there...

Marty, I saw something that SHOCKED me - in a GOOD way... VERY GOOD.

I don't know if you have seen any of the Yorkville Rams photos. There are very few. I lost almost all my photos years ago when a briefcase containing all scanned and to-be-scanned photos and documents was stolen from my car. The scanned disks were there as well.
Anyway, I have but ONE Rams team photo.
Now there is another - same photo but with ONE major difference. YOURS includes the water boy, who was Dennis Shannon and Dennis is also in that Stickball photo you got from Dottie Fischetti - except he has aged a bit in 50+ years.
So, if you have the full version of that photo, send me a copy and I will also return a copy with ID by number. There is no one in that photo I cannot identify.
I copied the frame as it ran but the thumbnail is way too small.
If you do not have it, please let me know who sent that to you. It is a classic.

Also... just wondering why you never did anything with the Ward's Island practice photo that had older guys than the Rams but guys who had Rams connections, OLGC connections, and / or both.

Attached is a Frame at the 1"31 Mark.

Best...

Philip,

I'll put these up today and see if we get a response. One of our followers was an avid bar patron, Walter and just might have more info on that area of Yorkville.

The street you are talking about is the east side of 2nd Avenue between 94th and 95th Streets, right?

Re the List of Bars...

Corrib Inn - I thought this was on the Southeast corner of 96th and Second?

Breen's - I thought it was on 85th, not 84th and was entered by walking downstairs from the sidewalk.
Jimmy and Bernie Breen were the owners. I do not recall a pool table?

Donovan's was owned by Tim Donovan. It was on the Northwest corner. Main entrance on Third with side entrance on 90th.

Across 90th, on the Southwest corner was another bar - double-door main entrance on Third and also side entrance on 90th.

Across Third, maybe 20 yards South of 90th, was Keane and Furey's. John Keane was one of the owners.

There was also a bar / restaurant on the Southeast corner of Lexington and 87th. The name escapes me.

One more: a small place on the East side of Second between 94th and 95th. Starting from 94th was the gas station which took up about a third of the block; then a tenement and this bar was in that building; then a two-lane inside ramp to a two-story garage; then two more (?) tenements - Klauer's Deli was in one and the O'Connells Pat, Lena, Bob (OLGC Class of 1954,) Michael, Dennis and Jimmy lived on the top floor. Pat did pigeons.
There was another retail store and then Mary's Luncheonette on the corner at 95th.

Charlie Rakovic (302 E 95th and OLGC Class of 1954) married Barbara Jahelka (sp?) whose family lived in the building with the bar.

Philip Wilson also lived at 302 and was also OLGC Class of 1954. His sister, Kathleen, was OLGC Class of 1959.
Gloria Rakovic was either one or two years behind Charlie and Philip.

(I am Philip.)
